Leftfoot works collaboratively with Mostly Jazz to programme the Leftfoot stage in our Off Piste area. How did you decide on this year’s acts?

Lots of different factors influence who we book for our stage; usually, it’s a combination of our personal taste in music, acts that we’ve seen before that have really impressed us live, or acts that we’ve known and been booking for years who are guaranteed to match the vibe of the festival.

What inspired you to start Leftfoot?

We started Leftfoot in Jan 2000 at the Medicine Bar (Custard Factory) in Digbeth. We had DJed at some amazing clubs in Europe where the DJ’s played a wide variety of genres and felt that Birmingham was really lacking this approach to clubnights. We wanted to bring DJs and artists we loved to play in a great space that wasn’t part of the mainstream club scene.

Leftfoot runs gigs out of the iconic King’s Heath venue, Hare & Hounds. Who is your favourite act you’ve booked there, and what made it so special?

Impossible to say one really, so many people have played over the last 20 years.  A few that stand out are Laurent Garnier, Marlena Shaw & Ezra Collective. Laurent Garnier is a DJ we’d been after for years so it was amazing when he finally said yes. Marlena Shaw was a really surreal moment as we’d been huge fans for years and Ezra Collective were clearly going to be a huge band so it was a real coup to get them for their first ever Birmingham show.

How early do you start considering acts for Mostly Jazz? Anything we can tease for 2027?

We’ve been discussing ideas with John, the Mostly Jazz Festival booker, for a few weeks already. We can’t give you any hints, but let’s just say we’ve got a really tough year to follow! We’re confident 2027 will be another vintage year!
