Jazz FM’s Tony Minvielle is coming to Moseley Park this summer to broadcast his Sunday show from the Festival. He is based in the West Midlands himself and shares his highlights from last year’s festival and who he’s looking forward to seeing in 2023.
So MFJS fest 2023 was a lovely experience where I caught up with many old friends and made new acquaintances, musically and personally. Best memories – catching up with the Incognito clan with man like Bluey, swapping cheeky banter with Steve and John aka Smoove and Turrell, raising my hands in the air as Huey Morgan literally rocked the crowd with banger after banger, Jasmine Myra bringing some much-needed serenity for our live session in our Jazz FM festival space, shaking a leg to the afro-beat niceness of Kokoroko, giving maximum applause to every classic dropped by Craig Charles, rocking to the mighty bass lines of festival favourites Fat Freddy’s Drop, Goldie doing the live thing, Mica doing the soulful thing, dance arena dons Crazy P and Jamz Supernova making the dance arena shake, and tucking into a sumptuous burger from one of the many amazing food stalls – not forgetting the amazing cross-generational crowd. These are the things that great festivals are made of.
And its rinse and repeat for this year’s proceedings with another amazing lineup headlined by Jazz FM favourites Yussef Dayes, hot off winning an Ivor Novello for their ‘Black Classical Music’ LP, plus dance legends Leftfield, lyrical vibes from the awesome Greentea Peng, new music from Ezra Collective’s talented trumpet player Ife Ogunjobi, deck duties from the ever popular Mr Scruff, the legendary James Lavelle (Mo Wax / Unkle) and the seriously sublime Luke Una. Plus ones to watch, Cherise, Sofia Grant, Ni Maxine on the vocal jazz tip, corto.alto on the fusion tip. And elephants in the room jazz-funk legends The Blackbyrds and the hit machine that is Kool & The Gang to round things off. It’s going to be a special one and I for one cannot wait.
You can listen to Tony Minvielle on Jazz FM every Sunday from 10am-1pm. Listen on your digital radio, on the free Jazz FM app, online or ask your smart speaker to “play Jazz FM”.
